Chess is popular at Onehunga High School. Every break you can see friends playing chess. In 2021 students started Chessmates. They welcome players of all skill levels from absolute beginners to those with high ratings. We are inspired by your skills look forward to seeing chess grow at OHS.

Looking for a space to explore your faith, ask big questions and connect with others? The Christian Group at Onehunga High School is a welcoming space for all students - whether you're curious, new to Christianity, or already passionate about your faith. We meet regularly for Bible studies, prayer and chats about life. Come along for good conversations, uplifting vibes and a chance to grow spiritually with others. Open to all year levels. Everyone is welcome - just come as you are!

Craft Club. Maybe you like making things or want to learn how to make things? Creative skills are relaxing and fun. We will learn a variety of crafts, depending on what students want to learn about or enjoy. Last year crafts included painting, diamond dots, sewing, embroidery, jewellery making, card making, poker work on timber, knitting, crochet and origami. Craft Club is after school Mondays 3:15pm - 4:30pm in A1. Everyone is welcome - Years 9 to 13. Beginner to expert. You don't need to bring your own equipment or project (but you can if you wish to). Most resources are provided (free of cost). There is a limit of 26 participants as sometimes we will be in a Technology Workshop. The Onehunga High School Creative Writing Club provides a space for students to work on their creative writing skills alongside other keen young student authors. Students are also supported to polish and refine their work for publication and entry into competitions for young writers across Aotearoa.

Our OHS Debate Club is a fun and welcoming place for students fo flex their critical thinking skills and enjoy a lively, yet respectful argument. The club is student led with Seniors and Juniors supporting each other in coaching and adjudication roles. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to form into teams and  compete in exhibition and interschool debate competitions as well. 

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a youth development program that encourages personal growth through service, skill-building, physical activity, and adventurous journeys. Last year, the Duke of Edinburgh Award group got underway at OHS, with students from years 9-12 getting involved. To receive the bronze level of the Duke of Edinburgh award, you must log 3-6 months of weekly sports, skills, and service, along with 2 tramps. At the end of July, the Award group completed their first practice tramp in the Coromandel, with their destination being the Pinnacles - climbing 600 metres in elevation from their starting point at the carpark. If you are aged 14 and up and the Duke of Edinburgh Award sounds like it might be for you, then come along and join in the fun next year!

Dungeons & Dragons, often abbreviated as D&D, is a tabletop role-playing game (RPG) where players create characters and embark on imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. Guided by a Dungeon Master (DM), players navigate a world filled with magic, monsters, and mysteries, making choices that shape the story's direction and outcome.

The OHS Enviroclub is a student-led group passionate about making our school and community more sustainable. In 2025, members have worked to reduce food waste by collecting scraps from the student kitchens and sending them to a local compost hub at Royal Oak Intermediate. Senior students are also leading a project to explore composting solutions that support our school’s green waste goals. The club takes part in local planting and weeding projects, both on school grounds and at the Onehunga Peoples' Garden. Students also represent OHS at sustainability forums and reflection days with other local schools. Whether you're into hands-on gardening, waste reduction, or sustainability leadership, the Enviroclub is a great way to make a difference.

If you can speak Hindi and would like to learn to read and write in Hindi then join Mrs Prasad in Mat 7 at break 2 on Fridays.

Whether you are aiming for EXCELLENCE or MERIT ENDORSEMENT or just needing some extra support with Literacy of numbers commonly known as NUMERACY, head your way to MAT 5 during the given times. All level of Mathematics support is available so grab the opportunity while you can.

Whether you're a football player, orienteering champ, athletics star or rugby player -- if you're looking to strengthen your fitness, stop by ENG 4 Mondays after school. Runners of all abilities are welcome. We'll start slow and steady and build our endurance throughout the year. Gather in ENG 4 at 3:15 and we'll head out for a run together -- down to the waterfront or maybe even to One Tree Hill.  Email Ms. Kuzmich if you're keen to join or have any questions. 

The OHS Study Centre is open after school twice a week, providing a quiet and focused space for students to get support with their learning. Staffed by teachers and tutors, it’s a great place to catch up on classwork, get help with homework, or prepare for assessments. All students are welcome—just bring your mahi and make the most of the extra support!

For anyone interested in practicing yoga postures , join me on Monday's after school from 3.15 to 4.15 in the Dance and Drama room. Come and give it a go if it is for you. You would expect: Gentle stretching & breathing exercises and simple yoga poses for flexibility & strength.
