L3 Media Class Inspired by Tinā and a Visit from the Filmmakers.
On April 1st, the L3 Media class had the exciting opportunity to attend a screening of Tinā—a powerful and moving New Zealand-made film that left a lasting impression on everyone who saw it. The story, visuals, and heartfelt performances sparked conversations that continued well after the credits rolled.
That inspiration was reignited on April 7th when director Miki Magasiva and production designer Ana Miskell visited our school to speak about the film and their work in the film industry. Students from L3 Media, L2/3 Drama, Year 9 Media, Year 9 Drama, and Year 9 Dance were all in attendance for the special session.
Miki shared his journey as a filmmaker in Aotearoa, reflecting on the importance of telling our own stories and how meaningful it is to see Pacific and New Zealand voices represented on screen. He encouraged students to embrace their identities and the unique perspectives they hold, reminding us that our stories matter and deserve to be heard.
Ana gave a fascinating look into the production side of Tinā, sharing behind-the-scenes footage and insight into how real-life locations—including Royal Oak Intermediate!—were transformed into cinematic scenes. Her talk highlighted the creativity and problem-solving that goes into every detail of a film.
Both speakers left students feeling inspired and empowered, showing that storytelling is not only a creative outlet but also a powerful way to connect, represent, and inspire.
