The Year 9 and Year 10 debating teams started the year with wins!
The Year 9 team members, Katherine Broczeck, Joe Milne, and Ollie Ren, won over Epsom Girls Grammar School in their first competition debate. Henry Taylor, the sub for this team, is yet to debate.
The Year 10 team of Ava Herzer, Arlo Gould, and Harley Taufelila had a good win over the Diocesan Team.
Both teams debated the proposition, ‘Every student should be required to play a sport at school.’ The Year 9 team argued in the affirmative, while the Year 10’s argued for the negative.
The students really enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to the next round where they are hoping for another win. We are very impressed that Ava, a German exchange student, elected to join the debating team, where she has to think quickly and speak in English!
Being in a debating team is great because it helps develop critical thinking, confidence, and public speaking skills. It teaches students how to research, construct arguments, and think quickly under pressure.
It's a fun and competitive way to improve academically and socially.
Well done to both teams!
