On Friday, Lisa and Sarah Hellyer raced in the Jennian Homes Track and Field Club Championships in Dunedin.
In the U18 800m final, billed as the battle between the twins, Lisa and Sarah attacked the race from the start. Abbey O’Brien from Dunedin valiantly kept pace but ultimately was no match for the twins. Sarah and Lisa set a blistering pace, not letting the wet track impede them at all. The lead did change with 200m to go, however, Lisa prevailed winning the Gold medal in a time of 2.08.73 and Sarah took the Silver medal in 2.09.18. It was a fantastic effort and truly special to have had both girls on the podium in 1st and 2nd place. Lisa’s time has been recognised as the Auckland U18 800m record ( with Sarah just 0.24 seconds behind).
Their success does not just happen. Every day, sometimes twice a day, the girls are training in the gym, on the track or out on the roads. In addition, they are careful with their diet, maintaining a high protein, high carbohydrate regime.
Both girls were recognised in the recent Excellence assembly for achieving Excellence endorsements for NCEA Level 1. They bring the same focus and dedication to their school work as they do to the track. We could not be more proud of these accomplished young women.
