A visit to Year 9 Science classes this week will see students immersed in the world of plants.
Students find out the answer to questions like, why are tomatoes and capsicums fruit rather than vegetables? They have celery sticks turning blue, to observe xylem tissue transporting water up to the plant. They dissect flowers to discover that most flowers usually contain both male and female reproductive organs and learn why the pollen and nectar flowers produce are important in attracting pollinators such as bees, birds and butterflies.
Not only are students learning about the role of plants in the world but they also learn about scientific principles and methods which they will develop as they move through the school.
Plants provide us with oxygen, food, fuel and fibre. There are very good reasons for students to begin to appreciate plants!
