The inaugural OHS Arts Awards was a joyous occasion. Students, whānau and staff came to celebrate the creativity and skill of our most talented young people.
Principal Shameen Hayat expressed her delight at having the Arts celebrated in the school. By honouring students in an awards ceremony, we want to encourage all students to pursue their passions and have their talent and hard work valued and recognised.
Head of Arts Mr Anthony Clark said he could not help becoming emotional, when he thought of the exceptional talent that we have at the school, and the Year 13s who would be leaving us. He beseeched them to always continue to follow their dreams.
Guest speaker and OHS alumnus Ken Vaega told of his journey from being a student to living his creative dream as a dancer and dance tutor. Ken is the first Polynesian Krump World Champion, something he never envisioned when he was at school. He too encouraged students to never let go of their dreams and never let anyone discourage them from pursuing their passions.
Entertainment was provided by dancers, Megan Webb and Bethany Morgan who performed a beautiful duet and Paul Auva’a whose powerful dance left us quite breathless.
OHS band Aria’s Circus performed and we were reminded of the exceptional talent we have in the school.
