Year 9 Students Win Tournament of Minds!

Year 9 Students Win Tournament of Minds!

Year 9 Students Win STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) category of Auckland Region, Tournament of Minds!

Congratulations to Shea Mendis, Lily Shultz, Arlo Gould, Jacob Henderson, William Ford-Evans and Chloe Simmons, who competed in the Auckland Region Tournament of Minds and won the STEM category!

Six weeks before competition day they were given the parameters of the competition. They had to conceive of a machine that would remove plastics from the environment. Then they had to build a prototype and to make it even more challenging everything they made or wore had to be made from scratch. Their idea had to be presented on the day of the competition as a dramatic performance, requiring a script, costumes and props!

OHS students made a backpack, that filtered microplastics and sorted other plastic waste into sizes up to 10cm.

The team has qualified for the finals in Wellington.
