Five senior students from OHS accompanied by Ms Elianna Gabriel have been selected to attend the High School Student Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day in Kumamoto Japan in October.
There are 166 High School groups from all over the world attending. Onehunga High School is the only New Zealand school invited to attend. This all-expenses paid trip is part of the UNESCO -ICO Tsunami Programme. The aim is to mitigate the damage caused by natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis and to develop future leaders who will take action to build resilience. It is hoped that the relationships that develop between students will build bonds and deepen the ties between countries.
All students attending from OHS intend to continue their tertiary studies in engineering or science. They have been involved in the eco-club and have been friends with Japanese students who have visited the school.
Congratulations, Jacob Cooper, Vinnie Carter, Vaitofiga Anesone, Olivia Clark and Vansh Kumar. We look forward to hearing from you on your return.
