Level 3 Geography students have recently returned from a fun filled and informative three days in Rotorua.
The students' were tasked with gathering information on the post covid recovery of tourist based operations in the area.
Approximately one in eleven New Zealanders work in the tourist industry and it is second only to dairying in foreign exchange earnings. Students' had many of the experiences that tourists to the area have. They visited Duck Tours and Te Puia, the geothermal park with its dramatic geysers, bubbling mud, Māori cultural experiences and Kiwi conservation centre. They went to the Agrodome and got up close and personal with the animals while learning about farming in New Zealand. They thoroughly enjoyed the Zorb and the Luge. The Redwoods Tree Walk was a favourite for some. It features 28 suspension bridges through redwood trees that are over 120 years old. This is an example of the ecotourism which is becoming increasingly important to the area. At each location visited, the students' learnt from the operators how Covid had impacted them and what measures they have taken to mitigate losses and grow their businesses.
The information they have gathered will be invaluable for students' for both their internal and external NCEA assessments.
