The ‘roof shout’ is a tradition on building sites in New Zealand and has become an event to look forward to at OHS, thanks in part, to the plentiful, delicious baking done for the occasion by the wonderful Mrs Maureen Meyer.
Today we were honoured to have present and former pupils of the building school, staff and representatives from the companies who so generously support the project join us for the ‘roof shout. Guests were welcomed by Head of Department Mr David Eastwood who thanked them for their support of our students. Principal Ms Shameen Hayat, added her thanks to all those people who have supported the building of our 12th house. Ms Hayat took the opportunity to thank Mr Eastwood for his 35 years of service to the school and made mention of the impact he has had on the lives of so many during his tenure, as was evidenced by the former pupils who were present because they now use their positions in the industry to support the project.
The house that students have built under the supervision of the indomitable Mr Ernie Meyer and Head of Department Mr David Eastwood is being purchased by Kāinga Ora, the crown agency that provides rental housing for New Zealanders in need. Kāinga Ora, Programme Director Mr Nick Seymour was present and urged pupils to make the most of the wonderful opportunity they had to pursue a career as a tradie, that could open the doors to many new possibilities.
The project allows students real experience in the building trades. They gain site safe qualifications and learn skills which provide them and their future employers with tangible benefits.
The project would not be as successful as it is without the support of many individuals and businesses. We are particularly grateful to Mr Ernie Meyer who volunteers on the site to work with our young people every day. Mr Peter Mayow lends his expertise and time to the school.
