Product Design for many of our Year 9 students is an unfamiliar subject. It is more challenging than they may have anticipated, however, for those students who persist and learn the new skills required, they take home products they can be proud of. Students are given a design brief and specifications and begin the process of manufacturing a product.
Year 9 Product Design students have recently completed an assignment where they were required to manufacture pewter pendants which were meaningful to them. Beginning with a concept related to their own individual identity, students sketched, planned and then modelled their idea into a 3D prototype. This clay prototype was then cast in a plaster mold, before being used to cast in pewter. Students learnt a number of new and challenging techniques and workshop skills and now have either a pendant or a keychain for their efforts.
