MUNA a Hit With Students.

MUNA a Hit With Students.

One of the highlights of the year for some students is their involvement in MUNA, the Model United Nations Assembly.

More than 300 students and their teachers from Auckland and Northland gathered together at Rosmini College to discuss, debate and try to come to a consensus about how to deal with the world’s most pressing problems. What they discovered is that it is not always easy to get a consensus.

OHS had three teams attending this year, one was allocated Samoa as the country they were representing, one The Netherlands and the other was representing Namibia. The allocation of these countries meant that our students' and teachers' had research to do, as they had to answer remits as their respective country would. The remits discussed included matters arising from climate change, the equality of women, respect of territorial sovereignty and the conduct of nations in space.

MUNA aims to develop participants' awareness of the role of the United Nations and the international situation in the countries of the world and it certainly achieved this. Students get the opportunity to improve their public speaking and debating skills and to meet students' from all over the region.

MUNA was an outstanding success, thoroughly enjoyed by all those who took part. Special thanks to Rotary for their sponsorship of this event and in particular the Rotary Club of Maungakiekie for their sponsorship of our students.
