Media Studies students attend NZ Classification Board’s ‘Censor for a Day’
L2 & L3 Media Studies students had the opportunity to attend the NZ Classification Board’s ‘Censor for a Day’ event yesterday.
Students learnt about the film and game rating system in New Zealand, then watched a pre-released movie, ‘Dream Scenario” starring Nicholas Cage. Students had to decide what they thought the movie should be rated, using the NZCB’s own criteria. Interestingly our students thought the film would have been rated R16, when in fact it had a classification of R13 with accompanying warnings. It was valuable for the classification board to see how the students’ classification varied from their own.
This was an excellent opportunity for our students to see behind the scenes and discover how local media industry works. There were some who decided they had found their dream job!
